County Championship: Mushtaq turns screw on Yorkshire

Mushtaq Ahmed sliced through the Yorkshire batting as Sussex pressed home their dominant position on the second day of the County Championship Division One match at Hove yesterday.

After Michael Yardy's 119 on Wednesday, Andrew Hodd (123) became the home side's second centurion before Sussex declared on 597 for eight.

They then reduced the Championship leaders to 188 for seven, with leg spinner Mushtaq taking four for 66.

Victory with maximum bonus points would take Sussex back to the top of the table with two games remaining.

And Hodd promised the county's rivals there would be no let-up in Sussex's pursuit of a second straight title.

He said: "We will go and play Durham in an aggressive manner. It's a style that suits us and we fancy our chances.

"In past games they have struggled against Mushtaq Ahmed."

The Pakistani, whose victims included his former Test captain Inzamam — took his tally to 73 wickets for the summer to leave Yorkshire needing 260 runs more to avoid the follow on.

"I'd like to think another title is on the way," added Hodd.

Hampshire's Michael Carberry hit his second century of the match as his team — also in the title shake-up—moved to the brink of victory against relegated Worcestershire.

Set a 532 victory target, the home side closed on 158 for four.

Lancashire's Glen Chapple and Durham's Ottis Gibson made it veterans' day at Blackpool as 18 wickets tumbled.

Chapple claimed seven for 53 as the visitors were skittled for 166.

Gibson then did his best to keep up, taking six victims for 44 runs, as Lancashire limped to 137 for eight.

In Division Two, Nottinghamshire captain Stephen Fleming battered Derbyshire for an unbeaten 217 from 239 balls at Chesterfield.

Former England wicketkeeper Chris Read — who will take over from the departing New Zealander as skipper next year — made 90 as Notts amassed 500 for six on the first day.

Promoted Somerset are closing in on the title after reaching 50 for the loss of Marcus Trescothick, chasing a victory target of 182 against Essex at Chelmsford.

Earlier, all-rounder Andy Bichel had led an Essex recovery, claiming two wickets as Somerset were bowled out for 312, then hitting 60 as the last two home wickets added 96.
