County Championship: Ramps double-hundred pushes Surrey through 600 barrier

Former England pair Mark Ramprakash and Mark Butcher produced an impressive third-wicket stand as Surrey declared on 626 for three on the second day of their LV County Championship match with Sussex.

Mushtaq Ahmed finally claimed the wicket of captain Butcher for 179 but Ramprakash was unbeaten on 266 when Surrey declared at Hove.

In-form Ramprakash hit 31 fours and three sixes during his innings, while Ali Brown added 50. The champions were 109 for one in reply at the close.

Another former England batsman, Graeme Hick, scored the 133rd first-class century of his career to put Worcestershire in control against Lancashire at Old Trafford on the third day.

The veteran inspired his side to a first innings score of 327, replying to Lancashire's below-par 161 on the first day while the hosts reached 63 without loss in their second innings.

But the one thing that could hamper the visitors' chances of victory is the Manchester weather that has frustrated both sides over the last two days.

The second day was a complete washout, while 32 overs were lost on Thursday before play started at 1.40pm, and more rain is forecast for Friday.

Kumar Sangakkara made a debut worth waiting for when Warwickshire and Durham finally got their match under way Edgbaston.

In his first appearance the Sri Lankan stroked an unbeaten 137, including 21 fours and a five, to help the home side recover from 23 for four to reach 267 for five at the close of the second day in a game decimated by rain.

In Division Two, Alex Wharf hit a career-best 128 not out as Glamorgan extended their first innings total to 392 all out at Bristol.

The all-rounder hit a six and 20 fours in his 226-ball innings while Mark Wallace also achieved a career-best in taking his overnight 99 to 128.

When Gloucestershire replied, teenager Jamie Harris took three wickets for 20 runs in the space of 21 balls to help reduce them to 118 for five at the close of the second day - with Marcus North unbeaten on 64.

Tom Lungley took three for 20 as Middlesex struggled to 248 all out at Derby. Ed Joyce (21), Ed Smith (28) Jamie Dalrymple (two) all fell to the 27-year-old after rain had caused further delays to play in the morning. Derbyshire had six on the board by stumps.

Leicestershire and Essex were frustrated by a second day of rain at Grace Road.
