Coyle's Burnley bid for unsettled Celt Riordan could seal Lafferty move to Parkhead

Derek Riordan has emerged as a leading January target for Burnley - and Celtic could use that interest to aid a new cash-plus-player move for Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty.

Burnley manager Owen Coyle views Riordan - who came off the bench to score the goal that salvaged a point for Celtic against St Mirren on Saturday - as the perfect addition to extend his excellent start in the English Championship since moving south from St Johnstone.

Coyle is considering an offer of around £500,000 for the former Hibernian forward, with the intention of partnering him alongside £3million-rated Lafferty.

Celtic, though, have kept tabs on Lafferty since having a £500,000 bid thrown out by the Turf Moor club 11 months ago.

It's understood the Parkhead outfit hope Riordan, who they rate at closer to £1m, could prove valuable in tempting Burnley to talk about a part-exchange deal for the 20-year-old when the transfer window reopens.

Lafferty, a 6ft 4in target man, has become one of English football's most sought-after prospects, with Fulham having a bid of £2.8m rejected in the summer.

Gordon Strachan has denied making Riordan available for transfer, but it still seems likely the 24-year-old will move on after just one SPL start so far this season. Hearts have also been linked with a move for the player, who scored more than 60 goals in his last three seasons at Easter Road, while other Championship clubs have noted their interest.

Coyle, though, hopes to lure Riordan with the promise of being restored as a central striker at Burnley, whose 3-2 win over Wolves on Saturday was their fourth successive away victory.

The club are unbeaten since Coyle took over and sit one place below the play-off spots. Celtic are also set to cash in on Maciej Zurawski, but the exit-bound striker has been warned against using a rogue Polish agent to secure his passage to Los Angeles.

As Sportsmail reported, the unhappy Parkhead player is in talks with David Beckham's LA Galaxy, via Polish football agent and textiles millionaire Jerzy Koplec.

Recently, however, Zurawski signed a two-year contract with Arena Sports Management, the successful football agency established by Scots partners Mark Donaghy and Martin Reilly.

Arena have been made aware of the interest from the MLS club and are awaiting clearance from Celtic to do a deal.

Koplec, though, is intent on agreeing terms with Galaxy irrespective of the fact he could face legal action from Arena if he presses ahead.
