Andrew Strauss enjoys smashing time as he brings up century
12 July 2010
Following the departure of Craig Kieswetter in the first over of the match, England captain Strauss and Trott put on an unbroken 186 — the highest second-wicket stand on this ground in a one-day international — and it was Strauss's first hundred in this format since March 2009.
The early signs were not good for the home side. After a short delay for rain, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl first on a green pitch that looked ideal for swing.
That decision soon paid off as Kieswetter's difficult summer continued when he was bowled for a duck by Mashrafe Mortaza from the fourth ball of the day.
Kieswetter's departure left the Bangladeshi contingent jubilant but their optimism receded quickly as Trott and Strauss took command, guiding England to 187 for one after 35 overs. Strauss was unbeaten on 100, with Trott 82 not out.
Looking equally comfortable against seam and spin bowling, Strauss hit nine fours and three sixes to reach his hundred.
His ability to clear the ropes was questioned at the beginning of the summer but the skipper has added power to his game.
To prove the point, he lofted Shafiul Islam over midwicket in the 27th over for the second maximum of his innings. Strauss repeated the trick in the 32nd over, advancing down the track to smash Abdur Razzak's left-arm spin away.
After his side's magnificent win in Bristol, Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons would have been tearing his hair out at their inability to make the most of the conditions. Only their captain Mortaza looked dangerous.
England had made two changes to the side defeated in Bristol, with Ravi Bopara replacing the injured Ian Bell and their main strike bowler Jimmy Anderson surprisingly left out in favour of Tim Bresnan.
