Dodgy Katich call backs case for trial by TV

Following the controversy caused by the umpiring referral system during England's tour of West Indies, Andrew Strauss and his players were probably glad to see the back of it for this summer's Ashes series.

Yet had the system - which will be in use for all Test matches from October - been deployed against Australia in Cardiff, England would probably have removed Aussie opener Simon Katich long before he reached his first Ashes century.

Katich had made 56 when a ball from off-spinner Graeme Swann hit him on the back pad as he failed to move his feet decisively to counteract the turning ball.

Umpire Billy Doctrove decided to ignore English appeals and not to raise the finger, but had England had recourse to the referral system, third umpire Richard Kettleborough may well have reached a different conclusion.

The referral system is similar to the challenge system in tennis.

Teams are allowed to question the umpire's decision, but they are permitted only two incorrect appeals per innings and technologies familiar to television viewers, such as Hawkeye and hotspot, are unavailable to the third umpire.

Swann certainly felt hard done by as he reflected on the delivery that could have accounted for Katich.

"We can whinge about the ball being soft or the wicket being flat, Katich not being given out lbw off my bowling when it was plumb," said Swann.

"We were a bit disappointed to be in that position at the end of the day."
