Gooch led England to the final 19 years ago where they were beaten by Pakistan. The current team have looked far less assured than Gooch's players, yet the former opener is confident they will find their best form in Saturday's quarter-final against Sri Lanka.

"Winning the World Cup didn't happen for me but I'm convinced this team have it in them to do it," said Gooch, who is the team's batting coach. "They've come through the first stage, they've shown their fighting qualities and resilience and I think we can get better. If we do, we have as good a chance as anyone."

Sri Lanka will be strong favourites, as the game takes place on their home turf in Colombo, and star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is expected to recover from the hamstring problems he suffered in the first-round match against New Zealand.
