Injury won't hold me back, says Tim Bresnan

Tim Bresnan today dismissed fears his injury problems would damage his chances of establishing himself as a key man for England in all forms of cricket this summer.

Bresnan missed the Test series against Sri Lanka after suffering a recurrence of a calf problem that affected him both in Australia and during the World Cup, but returned to action impressively in the one-day victory over the tourists at The Oval on Tuesday.

That display should keep Bresnan in the team for the second game of the five-match NatWest Series tomorrow, at his home ground Headingley, and he is confident his knee and calf worries are a thing of the past.

"I never thought the calf injury was career-threatening, or even that it would keep me out for the rest of the season - not at all," said the all-rounder. "It's a bit disappointing that it went again, but we caught it early, did the right things and it's healed well.

"I've had to manage problems with my knees since I was 18, but before the start of the season I had some injections in it, for tendonitis. They seem to have worked really well and hopefully the knee will be fine for ever now. I'm thinking about getting the other one done as soon as we have a break."

If Bresnan manages to regain his place in the Test team for the series against India later this summer, he will be one of a small group of players who England rely on in all three formats.

Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann are the only players who are automatic selections in Tests, one-day matches and Twenty20s, but Bresnan aims to join them - and believes playing in such different versions of cricket makes him a better bowler.

"It can be difficult switching between the three, but it does make you a smarter player," he admitted. "You have to think more about what you're doing, where you're going to bowl and what kind of field you want."
