Jade's hungry again after Butcher's chop

Jade Dernbach has become a key member of England's limited-overs plans this summer and hopes to help Surrey lift their first major trophy in eight years on Saturday, but the bowler admits he needed a drastic change of attitude to put his career on the right track.
Dernbach made his first-class debut in 2003, yet concedes that he was guilty of cockiness during his early years with the county. Now 25, he has earned the trust of the England selectors and coach Andy Flower - and he is so highly-regarded by Surrey that cricket manager Chris Adams wanted to fly him by helicopter to The Kia Oval to play in their CB40 semi-final victory over Sussex.
They play Somerset at Lord's in three days' time.
Dernbach has made his mark for England this summer, particularly in a one-day decider against Sri Lanka in July and in the single Twenty20 fixture against India, both at Old Trafford.
His ultimate objective is to establish himself as a Test player but he still knows how different things might have been had he not altered his approach.
Dernbach said: "There was a period where I realised 'If I continue like this, I'm not going to have a career'. I had a higher regard for my abilities than what I was actually producing.
"In my early days, especially in four-day cricket, my stats weren't great but I thought I had cracked it because I was playing for one of the biggest clubs in the country. The minute you get lazy, you're not going anywhere.
"You can have talent but, if you abuse it, it can be taken away from you. I needed a kick up the backside and our former coach Alan Butcher, especially in his last year in 2008, was massive for me. He was a manager and a great friend.
"When a man like that tells you some home truths, you sit up and listen. I wasn't playing in the four-day side and I was in and out of the one-day side, so I was just playing second-team cricket. I was better than that, so I made a conscious decision to change my lifestyle.
"It doesn't mean you become a recluse but it's about changing your mindset. A lot of people would kill to be in my position, so you need to be humble and not take things for granted.
"Now my goal is to play Test cricket. I hope to be on that plane to Dubai for the Pakistan series early next year. I have something to offer in those conditions with the reverse-swinging ball. Fingers crossed, I'll be there."
With Stuart Broad injured, Dernbach should be involved in the final one-day international of the summer, against India in Cardiff on Friday, before hot-footing it back to Lord's.
Rory Hamilton-Brown's young team have finished the season strongly and still had a good chance of promotion to Division One as they went into the final four-day match of the season against Derbyshire.
Dernbach's return - his variations and ability to bowl well at the death make him a formidable one-day competitor - could prove crucial for Surrey on Saturday, and he believes that victory in the final could start a fresh era of success at The Kia Oval.
"It would be massive," he said. "That's what the club and the fans have been crying out for."
