Jonathan Trott looks like a man for all seasons as Ashes plans take shape

Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan could not help making multiple references to "buffet bowling" and "pies" during his commentary stints for Test Match Special as Jonathan Trott gorged himself on the tasty morsels.
Despite early morning cloud cover and a May pitch Bangladesh's captain Shakib Al Hasan was so unimpressed with his pace attack that he brought himself on to bowl spin after a paltry 10 overs.
And the least said about the tourists' fielding the better. Suffice to say it is the one area that any side can work on. It suggested that Bangladesh were happy to make up the numbers rather than offer much by way of meaningful competition.
All of which presented an unusual predicament for England's top order. Test cricket is supposed to be testing and it was revealing how each of the top six reacted to the situation — especially in the context of this winter's Ashes tour.
With Paul Collingwood rested for this series England's top six are the unwitting contestants of a new gameshow called 'Who wants to be on that plane to Australia?' In seven Tests against Bangladesh there have been 10 England centuries, so no pressure then, you might think.
Alastair Cook was unlucky to be triggered leg before when he would have been reprieved had the referral system been in operation. Andrew Strauss needed runs as much to reassert his own authority at the helm. He seldom fails to make runs at Lord's which must feel like his own backyard and it was a surprise he did not post a hundred.
New dad Kevin Pietersen could barely bring himself to lower his game to the required level unfurling a couple of rasping drives before falling once more to left-arm spin.
For all the flowery talent in Ian Bell's locker he was unable to cope with the one genuinely good ball of the day from Rubel Hossain with lacklustre footwork that would not have impressed Strictly Come Dancing judges.
On debut Eoin Morgan needed no motivation to dig in and despite a couple of aerial scares his bustle at the crease looks ideally suited to pushing England's middle and lower order along.
All of which leaves Jonathan Trott. Trott has his sceptics after a lean winter but I'm not one of them. His Ashes debut oozed authority and that was the hallmark of his 175 yesterday.
Perhaps being under a bit of pressure helped motivate him that little bit more but it was mighty impressive the way Trott batted, batted and batted some more. He gave precious few chances and showed he has cover drives aplenty to match his obvious legside strengths.
All you can do is play the opposition in front of you and Trott did just that. Yes, his crease scratching routines betray his intensity but it's an intensity that is part of his batsmanship. An inflexible will and determination to bat the opposition off the park whether that's Bangladesh or Australia. It's a trait that could be seriously useful when Australia are letting fly this winter as they seek to recover a precious urn, lost in transit last summer.
If Kevin Pietersen really can't be persuaded to come in at first drop then why look further than Trott for the anchor role in that position. He looks a man hungry for success.
