Paul Collingwood has double mission

Paul Collingwood is on a double mission at Old Trafford tonight when he aims to help England pile more misery on Australia and cement his place as captain for the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean next April.

Collingwood's role as captain comes to an end after this meeting with the Aussies but he is desperate to continue in the job.

There can be no better way for him to make sure the selectors keep him as leader than to beat the old enemy again and win the two-match series, the first of which was abandoned due to rain at the same venue on Sunday night. Collingwood is clear on his ambitions and said: "Until I'm told otherwise, I want to lead England into the next Twenty20 World Cup. I'm pretty happy with that arrangement."

With Test captain Andrew Strauss unlikely to return to the shortest form of the game, Collingwood is the outstanding candidate to keep the role following the current series with Australia.

The first game of the mini-series was washed out, with England, chasing 146 to win, wobbling on four for two.
