Stuart Broad will be better than me, says Andrew Flintoff
24 August 2009
Flintoff confirmed that he would undergo an operation on his right knee- the second he has had in the space of four months - that will rule him out of England's one-day duties during the next two months, and he could even be out of action until next summer.
But as he waved goodbye to the Test arena after 79 appearances, Flintoff is confident Broad, who was man of the match in the decisive victory at The Brit Oval, will prove a worthy successor.
"Once I've gone, I think you'll find a better cricketer in Stuart Broad stepping up to the plate," Flintoff said. "You can see how the team have grown, with young lads coming to the fore.
"We've seen how good Stuart is, and the side is in good hands with Andrew Strauss. I've enjoyed this series and I'll celebrate the win, but I think there is a lot more to come from this England side.
"Anyone who has witnessed this series can see how special Test cricket is, so it will be hard for me to watch the Ashes in the future, but it's not possible for me to go on in five-day cricket.
"My body is packing up in this form of the game, but is something I will desperately, desperately miss.
"There is enough to go at in one-day cricket with World Cups and other competitions but the Ashes is the ultimate. Looking around The Oval at the end, you can see why you train and practise so hard for it."
