Croatia v England LIVE: No Setanta? Fear not, follow all the action from Zagreb here

28min: Calamity James is up to his old tricks but thankfully Wes Brown puts his body in the way to block Olic's effort, with James nowhere.

25min GOAL: Walcott fires home from an acute angle. Hard and low, great strike. 1-0 England. A defensive cock-up by the Croats allows the ball to break to Theo, who buries it.

Cue all the obvious boy-becomes-a-man drivel from Champion. He doesn't disappoint.

22min: That's a penalty. Stonewaller. Simunic hauls down Heskey six yards out but the daft referee waves play on. Great knock-back by Walcott, though.

The barmy official Lubos Michel is a member of parliament in his native Slovakia. Just goes to show what we all knew - you can't trust politicians to get anything right.

21min: More great Setanta analysis from JC: 'A room in the Croatia team hotel is £40 a night.'

Banter aside, that's actually quite interesting. Imagine Rio and Co bedding down in the Putney Bridge Premier Travel Inn, nice as it is. I think not.

17min: That's better from Chrissy Waddle, if not England.

'Wayne Rooney's dropping too deep to find the ball,' states the former England penalty fluffer. He's right, though. Heskey is cutting a lonely figure up top.

14min: Olic rinses Ashley Cole down the Croatia right and cuts inside the England penalty box with purpose. Rio and JT block his effort. But it's all the home side as Corluka wins a corner. Rooney heads clear.

12min: Corner to the Croats - David James comes for it, but he's bumped off the ball and it falls to Corluka - twice. He blasts against the side-netting at the second attempt. Phew.

Heat of the battle: Niko Kovac (left) of Croatia gets the better of England striker Emile Heskey

6min: Walcott blunder No 1. Lamps sends the 19-year-old in with a delightful flighted pass but the youngster trips over the ball in comedy fashion. Very Robbo-esque, dare I say it. And yes I do.

Chris Waddle wonders if Theo Walcott has his boots on the wrong feet? Setanta must need all the rights money they can get, if they're paying for priceless analysis like that. Come on, Christopher. Tut tut.

5min: Modric is running the show. The little Spurs tinker sweeps past Lampard and the remnants of England's midfield but Rio clears.

Scotland are 1-0 up in Iceland. Kirk Broadfoot after 18 mins, apparently. Oh, well done the plucky Scots. That's much better than the weekend.

8pm KICK-OFF: A great start for John Champion behind the Setanta mic - 'Tin hats might be needed here, given the state of the stadium and the opposition' -  as Croatia kick off. Not one for sweeping generalisations, our John. Good job no one, except yours truly, is listening.

7.55pm: Good evening, there's no Paul Robinson and no Wally with a Brolly in Zagreb tonight but there's a little frisky winger called Theo, who all England fans hope will be running the Croats ragged on their own patch.

It was 2-0 last time we were here, when Gary Neville slipped a back-pass to poor old Robbo. None of that tonight, thanks chaps. It's game on.

ENGLAND: James; Brown, Terry, Ferdinand, A Cole; Walcott, Barry, Lampard, J Cole; Heskey, Rooney.

CROATIA: Pletikosa; Simunic, Robert Kovac, Corluka, Pranjic; Rakitic, Petric, Nico Kovac Srna; Modric, Olic.

Meanwhile, TV Sports network Setanta responded to the widespread furore over tonight's World Cup qualifier between  England and Croatia not being available on terrestrial television by broadcasting a free highlights show themselves.

Starting role: Theo Walcott against Andorra at the weekend

Starting role: Theo Walcott against Andorra at the weekend

The crucial early match in Fabio Capello's reign as England coach will be shown again in highlights form at 11.30pm on the Freeview and Sky platforms that are available in 21million homes.

This late decision by subscription channel Setanta was only made public at 6pm, two hours before the kick-off in Zagreb in order to minimise the damage done to the numbers of armchair viewers who would otherwise have bought a Setanta package in order to watch the England game.

Earlier in the day ITV, who have done a joint deal with Setanta for England home matches and the FA Cup, doubled their original £250,000 offer for last night's highlights to £500,000 which was again rejected by their TV partners. The BBC had also seen their £500,000  offer  for highlights for  the Andorra and Croatia matches fall massively short of Setanta's value.

The Irish-owned network paid the Croatian FA £5m for their UK  TV rights to the World Cup  qualifier - which was open for any other TV station to buy - and wanted 20 per cent of that sum (£1m) for highlights to mitigate the loss of  exclusivity. But the terrestrial stations were not prepared to offer anywhere near Setanta's figure.

Setanta director of sport Trevor East said: "We realise the importance of  terrestrial highlights for England games and we've been negotiating for weeks. They strung us along believing we'd cave  in."
