Croatian star sold on Celtic: Monaco man Leko 'eager to become Bhoy'

Celtic  were last night told Croatian star Jerko Leko would snub interest from the English Premier League and cash-rich Shakhtar Donetsk to sign on at Parkhead.

The 28-year-old Monaco midfielder is understood to be on Gordon Strachan's wanted list after Celtic missed out on compatriot Ognjen Vukojevic, who instead moved to Dynamo Kiev in a £6million switch last month.

Leko, valued at about £2.5m, could perform a similar role as Strachan looks to beef up his central options for next season.

Agent Damir Jozic insisted his Euro 2008-bound client would regard a switch to the SPL champions as by far his best option.

"Jerko has always had a wish to play in England or Scotland. He likes the British style of football," said Jozic.

"I know Celtic are looking for a No 6-type player, an aggressive midfielder, but we will have to wait and see what happens between the clubs.

"Jerko has a contract at Monaco until 2010 but he is very happy to hear that a Champions League team on Celtic's level has an interest in him.

"Portsmouth, Bolton and Shakhtar Donetsk would also like to sign him. I think the transfer fee would be between 3m Euros and 4m Euros but, again, it would be up to Monaco to react to offers.

"It is impossible to predict exactly what will happen but, to my mind, if Celtic want the player, then he will sign for them. There can always be a solution."

Jozic insisted nothing will happen until Croatia's interest in Euro 2008 was at an end.

Slaven Bilic's side are in Group B alongside co-hosts Austria, Germany and Poland.

"Jerko is going to the Euro finals and only wants to concentrate on playing for Croatia, so we will see if anything happens after that," said Jozic. "There have been articles saying that Monaco will transfer-list as many as 15 players this summer, but that is excessive.

"Jerko is also one of only two Monaco players going to the Euro finals, so I don't think they will be rushing him out of the door."
