Curbishley set for emergency kitty as Bellamy faces long time out

West Ham's billionaire owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson is preparing to make emergency funds available to manager Alan Curbishley in time for next month's transfer window.

Gudmundsson, who replaced Eggert Magnusson as chairman last week, was hoping to avoid a repeat of last season's winter panic buying.

However, the extent of West Ham's injury problems, with 10 first-team players out, will dictate Gudmundsson's short-term financial policy.

Craig Bellamy (left) needs an operation and is set to be sidelined for the long term

Curbishley is particularly concerned about his striking options following the 2-0 home defeat by Everton.

Craig Bellamy is his biggest worry. The Welshman, who has been troubled all season by an abdominal problem, will undergo an operation and looks likely to be out long-term.

With Dean Ashton far from match-fit, Carlton Cole suffering from a hip injury, Bobby Zamora out for almost four months with a knee injury and Henri Camara off to the African Nations Cup next month, the situation is acute.

"We have a good squad but we haven't seen some of them yet," Curbishley said. "I have players with no date for a return and some not far away. We'll have to assess it as we go along.

"It's frustrating. We did a lot of business in the summer but we've never had the chance to get it all together. We've hardly been able to name the same side in successive games."
