Darcheville is adamant that Rangers can still seize title from Celtic's grasp

Striker Jean-Claude Darcheville bagged a double to keep Rangers' slim SPL hopes alive last night  -  and then backed the Ibrox side to pull off a miraculous title triumph at Pittodrie on Thursday night.

A 3-0 win over St Mirren at Love Street at least ensured that the championship chase will go to the last day of the season, with both halves of the Old Firm level on points ahead of Thursday night's finale.

Celtic will need to beat Dundee United at Tannadice to be sure of clinching a third successive title.

Thanks, skipper: Darcheville acknowledges Barry Ferguson after the duo combined for Rangers' third goal

But the four-goal cushion held by Gordon Strachan's men means that Rangers will either have to pray for help from United, or rack up the goals in their own away game against Aberdeen.

A 1- 0 victory for Celtic at Tannadice would leave Walter Smith's team needing to win by five clear goals.

However, Darcheville said after his double counter last night: 'Anything is possible in football, so maybe we can get five or six goals against Aberdeen. We could also score just one.

"I believe anything is possible and now everybody is waiting for Thursday. The last time we played Dundee United at Tannadice, it finished 3-3.

"And they fought back against us very well in the CIS Cup Final. So maybe they can do something against Celtic on Thursday. Maybe they are good enough to get a result that helps us. I think they are good enough to do so.

"Do I believe in miracles? Yes. But let's all wait and see what happens on Thursday."

Striking ambition: Darcheville and Boyd savour Rangers' second goal

Kris Boyd set Rangers on the road to certain victory and an expected deluge of goals when he found the net after just four minutes last night, the Scotland striker tapping in for his 23rd club goal of the season.

When Darcheville made it 2-0 with 24 minutes gone, it seemed as if Rangers might begin to let loose in front of goal.

But only a second goal for Darcheville with just over 20 minutes remaining was to follow, the French striker having earlier hit the post with an acrobatic overhead kick.

Nacho Novo also had a shot headed off the line and, late on, Boyd had a penalty claim waved aside when his header was cleared off the line by Gary Mason.

Television replays later showed that the ball had hit the midfielder on the chest.

Darcheville added: "I think it was just important for us to win the game tonight. After dropping points against Motherwell on Saturday, it was important to win again.

"Now everybody is thinking about the Aberdeen game. We have to go and win there, then everyone can just wait to see what the result is from Dundee.

"At the start of tonight's game, we scored very early and everybody thought it would be possible to score a lot of goals. We scored three, which isn't too bad.

" I have been involved in a similar situation once before, with Bordeaux, when we needed to win the last game to survive. We won and Bordeaux stayed in the top league."
