Darts champ Adams suffers shock defeat

World champion Martin Adams suffered a shock defeat to Scotland's Robert Thornton in the quarter-finals of the Winmau World Masters in Bridlington today.

Adams, the top seed, looked impressive in the previous round against Stuart Kellett but Thornton made a fast start and held his nerve to close out a 3-1 success.

"I'm a bit shell-shocked but I've been playing well all week," said Thornton afterwards.

He will face Martin Atkins in the last four tomorrow after the fourth seed edged a tight game with fans' favourite Ted Hankey 3-2.

John 'Boy' Walton produced a superb nine-dart finish in his last-16 clash with Martin Phillips, and the Yorkshireman impressed again when he came up against Tony O'Shea, winning 3-1.

Former world champion Walton will take on Darryl Fitton for a place in the final after the Stockport thrower overcame Australian Simon Whitlock 3-0.
