Blade runner Oscar Pistorius was well short of the Olympic 400metres qualifying time in Milan last night. The South African double amputee, who runs on carbon-fibre blades, had won the right to compete against able-bodied runners six weeks ago and pursue his Beijing dream but could only record 47.78sec in the B race, chasing 45.55.
Britain’s Martin Rooney won the 400m A race in 45.44sec. Britain’s Olympic team have been set a target of 41 medals to finish eighth in the medal table at the Games next month by the government agency who fund their preparations.

UK Sport call it a ‘stretch target’ and expect only 35 to be won but it may not be much of a stretch if an independent survey by a neutral expert proves correct.
The latest projection by Luciano Barra, former chief executive of the IAAF,has Britain fourth with 18 golds, twice as many as in Athens, and 48 medals in all. His projections have proved remarkably accurate for the last two summer and two winter Olympic Games.
