Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe and Manchester United defender Wes Brown are two players that Keegan is known to covet and who could now arrive to join the Magpies in the transfer window.
Keegan's shock appointment was announced at 4.30pm yesterday and he has been handed a lucrative three-and-a-half year deal worth £8million and been charged with lifting the mounting gloom on Tyneside 11 years after walking out on the club.
Keegan's first big test will be against Arsene Wenger's Arsenal in the FA Cup on 26 January at Emirates stadium, followed by a Premier League encounter at the same ground three days later.
Keegan has been out of football since he quit as Manchester City boss in 2005 and has since launched Soccer Circus - the interactive football attraction - in Glasgow.
Soccer Circus facilities have now also been installed and nearly ready to open doors in both Dubai and in Center Parcs in England.
The Glasgow venture has not been a successful as Keegan had hoped though have been few complaints from those that have visited Soccer Circus where the facilities are said to be excellent.
Former Fulham manager Chris Coleman has linked with the appointment as Kevin Keegan's right-hand man at Newcastle United.
However Alan Shearer revealed last night that he was willing to talk to Keegan about helping out at St James' Park.

Shearer had said on BBC1: "First and foremost, I'm not so sure he's thought about it. He's his own man. "If he were to ring me and ask to speak to me, I would certainly speak to him. I'd be foolish not to.
"I was never really a serious possibility (for the manager's job) because they were looking for experience."
However, he added: "I haven't really seen myself as a number two."
