Defoe turns on the style as Keane revives Spurs

Super cool Robbie Keane's double strike set Spurs on their way to a comfortable 4-2 victory after they fell behind at Leyton Orient last night.

Keane's predatory instincts gave Tottenham the confidence to deliver the spectacular attacking football that had brought them three wins in South Africa, with substitute Jermain Defoe adding the third and then new signing Darren Bent scoring another.

Spurs had resolved the problem of having four strikers for two positions by playing captain Keane in the hole behind the front two of £16million Bent and Dimitar Berbatov with Defoe, again, settling for a place on the bench.

It was a challenge to Defoe that he would take up in style in the second half.

Spurs also showed off their £7m central defender Younes Kaboul, signed from French club Auxerre last month.

Little Orient, already 6-4 second favourites to be relegated from League One after their narrow escape last season, looked overawed as Spurs turned on the passing style for the first 15 minutes.

Defender Brian Saah's mistake let in Bent down the right and he blasted a 25-yard shot over the bar after six minutes.

Two minutes later a Jermaine Jenas corner was headed over by Berbatov.

Jenas then had a good scoring chance from a Keane corner driven beyond the far post but Orient keeper Stuart Nelson scrambled the ball away before adding a sharp save from a volley by Spurs left back Paul Stalteri.

But just when it seemed that the Premier League side would turn their dominance into a goal, they went a goal down on 17 minutes.

Jason Demetriou knocked a ball in from the left and Adam Boyd flicked a back-header from some 12 yards that embarrassed England keeper Paul Robinson as it looped over his outstretched hand and under the bar.

But within a minute Spurs were level. Orient were all over the place as Steed Malbranque drove in from the left. His pass into the goalmouth brought about a pinball effect before Keane fired in from five yards.

Spurs were still well on top and Tom Huddlestone sent a low drive inches past the right post, the visitors claiming the keeper Nelson got a touch.

They went ahead when Fred Murray took down Kaboul, after home defender Tamika Mkandawire had prevented a Bent shot going in.

Keane's spot kick was placed expertly just inside the right post.

Spurs brought on Defoe for Berbatov for the second half and he made it 3-1 after 62 minutes with a low left foot shot from 15 yards.

And it was Defoe, stating his case for a starting role, who put new boy Bent through on 66 minutes as Spurs hit cruise control.

Efe Echanomi grabbed an added time consolation for Orient.
