Derby prepare £2m bid for frustrated Blackburn striker Jason Roberts

Derby manager Paul Jewell is already planning for life in the Coca-cola Championship and is preparing a £2million bid for Jason Roberts - but they could face stiff opposition from Sunderland and Bolton.

The Blackburn striker has made no secret of the fact that he is unsettled at Ewood Park and has failed to command a regular first-team place.

The former Wigan marksman has faced stiff competition from Benni McCarthy and Roque Santa Cruz this season and he has also been struggling with injuries. He has recently returned to action after a groin strain and played in the 3-1 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

Jewell wants Roberts to spearhead his promotion challenge next season, just as he did when the Latics reached the top flight for the first time in 2004/5.

Rovers manager Mark Hughes is expected to let Roberts go this summer but Roy Keane is believed to be monitoring the situation and Sunderland are ready to pounce. Bolton see Roberts as the ideal replacement for Nicolas Anelka, who moved to Chelsea and could also join in the hunt, according to the Daily Mirror.
