Derby reject Newcastle bid for Barnes

Plus point: Giles Barnes has been impressive for Derby as they have struggled this season

Derby manager Paul Jewell has confirmed the club have turned down a verbal offer from Newcastle for Giles Barnes.

The highly-rated 19-year-old has previously been linked with Tottenham but Jewell revealed the Magpies are the only side who have made a bid for the midfielder.

He said: "They (Newcastle) did come up with an offer yesterday, a verbal offer, but it was nowhere near our valuation."

The Rams youngster missed the early part of the season with a broken foot but has been one of County's few plus points in what has been a dismal campaign for the Barclays Premier League's bottom side, who have won just once in 23 league games.

Jewell admitted he was reluctant to part with one of his prized assets but refused to rule out the possibility of Barnes leaving Pride Park before the transfer window shuts on Thursday night.

He added: "When I see other players leaving for £4million or £5million what we want for Giles Barnes is not unreasonable.

"He is not going to leave here on the cheap because he is a player we would like to keep.

"But if Giles wants to go and play somewhere else, he wants to play in the Premier League, we won't stand in his way, as long as that is right for the club."

Newcastle appointed Dennis Wise as their new director of football yesterday and the former Leeds boss is expected to play a major role in identifying transfer targets.

The Magpies have already lost out on one of them after defender Jonathan Woodgate snubbed a move to St James' Park in favour of joining Spurs.
