Devastated Deng out of Great Britain's Euro basketball bid

Luol Deng is out of Great Britain' s European Basketball Championship campaign after an insurance company refused to cover his £37.8million club contract.

It is a huge blow as Great Britain prepare for the 2012 Olympics with the Chicago Bulls forward a key member of the squad.

More immediately, his absence will be a crushing blow for GB as they try to reach the 2009 European Championship finals with qualifying games against Israel, Bosnia and the Czech Republic next month.

Deng, 23, currently with the GB squad in Sardinia, is said to be devastated by the news.

  • Great Britain's 10-match unbeaten streak came to a disappointing end in Cagliari when they threw away a 16-point half-time lead to lose 77-70 to Estonia in their second game of the Sardinia tournament.

Joel Freeland, playing his first game of the summer after sitting out last night's win     over Belgium, hit 13 points in his best international performance so far.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu, kept out of the action for the whole of the second quarter,              returned to complete 13 points for GB.
