Devastated Ohuruogu may quit after she loses appeal

Christine Ohuruogu, the East London athlete who was to have been the face of the 2012 Olympics, hinted at quitting at the age of 22 after her appeal against a 12-month ban for missing drugs tests was rejected.

Ohuruogu, the Commonwealth 400metres champion, dropped the heavy hint in a statement when she said: "Today's ruling has robbed me of my chance to represent Great Britain in any future Olympic Games and I find myself unable to come to terms with this.

Tough decisions to make: Christine Ohuruogu hinted at quitting athletics at the age of 22

"I am totally stunned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision and the length of time it has taken them to reach their conclusion that my original ban of a year should remain in place.

"To be prevented from competing in the sport I love because of a lack of understanding of the system is very hard to come to terms with, especially as athletes from other sports in the same position as me have received much shorter bans of three months."

Ohuruogu's 12-month ban, for not being where she said she would be when testers pounced, cost the one-lap star her bid for the European title last year and she is likely to miss this year's World Championships.

Her ban ends only a week before the deadline for entries. She is barred from Olympic selection because of a British Olympic Association bylaw forbidding anybody charged with a drug offence, although a ban on a judo player for the same offence was lifted last year on appeal.
