Dickson's heroics in vain as Baggies reach next round

Charlton suffered FA Cup heartbreak as they went out 4-3 on penalties to West Bromwich Albion but Chris Dickson showed he could have a role to play in their promotion push.

The 23-year-old striker came off the bench to score his first senior goal for Charlton to force extra time and had another effort hit the post before the third-round replay ended 2-2.

Dickson coolly slotted in his penalty in the shoot-out but Luke Varney and Zheng Zhi couldn't convert theirs.

Charlton manager Alan Pardew was delighted with Dickson's contribution.

"He's improved since going out to Gillingham on-loan," said Pardew. "He did himself no harm at all tonight whatsoever" Charlton striker Chris Iwelumo, who had a hand in Darren Ambrose's goal, was also impressed by Dickson.

"He's going to be a very good player," said Iwelumo. "He's got an eye for goal and is certainly one of my challengers for a striker's role. But it's vital to have competition for places if we're going to be successful."

With Charlton out of the Cup, Iwelumo says the team will now focus fully on getting back to the Premier League.

"Losing is a disappointment but at least it means we can concentrate on the league now," he said. "There's nothing to distract us from our goal of getting promoted."
