Distraught Terry may be handed England captaincy by Capello

Fabio Capello may try to lift John Terry's mood by inviting him to captain England in the friendly against the USA on Wednesday.

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand remains the favourite to become Capello's long-term skipper after impressing the national team coach against France in March.

Distraught: John Terry arrives for England duty on Saturday

But this week's match at Wembley could be the last chance to experiment - given that players exhausted after last week's Champions League final may not have to travel for the game against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday - before Capello makes a permanent appointment at the start of next season.

He chose Ferdinand ahead of Chelsea skipper Terry for the last game in Paris and could yet conclude that it would be better to stick with the central defender who captained the Barclays Premier League champions to European glory in Moscow last week.

But Terry was the England captain before Capello's arrival as successor to Steve McClaren and the Italian would have seen how the player suffered after his penalty miss in the Champions League final.

Terry is so distraught about his part in the shootout defeat that he has issued a public apology to Chelsea fans. If Capello considers it important to lift Terry's spirits, and recognises the fact that he deserves the chance to stake his claim, he may give him the armband.
