Diver Daley dazzles with record score to confirm he will be heading to Beijing

Tom Daley's selection for two events at the Beijing Games as the youngest British competitor for 48 years was formally confirmed yesterday after the Plymouth 14-year-old delighted judges with a career-best performance in the Olympic trials in
Leeds.

Diver Daley’s place in the 10metres platform and 10m synchro platform was guaranteed but he was asked to show proof of his fitness.

He did that spectacularly, breaking the 500 points barrier for the first time with 512 points.

Daley, one of Sportsmail’s Magnificent Seven whose progress to London 2012 we are monitoring, will be one of three among the 10-strong team who will compete in two events.

Tonia Couch, a member of the same club as Daley, and Stacie Powell ensured their places in the platform and synchro platform during the trials.

Meanwhile swimmer Mark Foster, who is counting down to his fifth Olympic Games, smashed through the 22sec barrier for the 50m freestyle in Zagreb. Now 38, he recorded a time of 21.96sec to reclaim the British record from Simon Burnett and rank himself ninth in the world.
