Don't judge Theo on goals alone, says Pearce

Theo Walcott scored on his return to St Mary's last night but England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce believes the forward should not be judged on goals alone.

Walcott's thumping strike against Republic of Ireland secured a 3-0 win and virtually assured the side a play-off to reach the 2009 European Championships.

It took Walcott's Under-21 tally to five goals, one more than he has managed for Arsenal since moving from Southampton two years ago.

Although he has yet to shine under Arsene Wenger, Pearce is pleased with the progress of the 18-year-old.

"People probably expect too much from him but I think he's developing nicely," Pearce said.

"He's working for a fantastic club manager at a fantastic club. We're pleased he scored but that is not the be-all and end-all Theo will be judged by me and his club on how he does over 90 minutes."

The player himself is sure he can handle the expectation. Walcott said: "I don't pay any attention to the criticism about me. The only ones I listen to are my family and close friends. I just try to get on with football and try to perform every game."

James Milner scored England's other goals, although his first deflected in off Stephen O'Halloran.
