Doom-laden Derby ready to axe Davies

Derby have lost patience with manager Billy Davies and are expected to sack him in the next 24 hours.

Fearful of being cut adrift at the foot of the Premier League after a disastrous start, the board have decided on drastic action to stop the rot and are likely to announce Davies' departure today.

On the way out: Derby boss Billy Davies

It is understood the Scot has a £750,000 buy-out clause in his contract - inserted to deter would-be suitors after he steered Derby to promotion last season - and will receive roughly that amount in compensation.

The former Preston boss made a plea for investment in the club in the wake of Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Chelsea and argued that the recruitment of 'five or six' new faces in the January transfer window could spark a revival in their fortunes.

But if the money is to be forthcoming, Pride Park chiefs have decided they want someone else to spend it after seeing their side nosedive towards an immediate return to the Championship.

Despite Davies' spectacular success in hoisting Derby up through the play-offs after being lured away from Deepdale, he has failed to equip them for the demands of the top flight.

They are four points from safety, with a goal difference of minus 28.
