Anderson took half-a-dozen wickets (6-42) in an innings for the first time in Test cricket to leave New Zealand reeling on 96 for six when bad light provided respite.

The Lancashire paceman, who earlier hit a Test-best 28 in England's 364, dismissed Ross Taylor and Daniel Flynn in a double-wicket maiden and added two further scalps in a fine evening session spell.

Taylor fought for an hour and 15 minutes before slicing to gully while the stocky Flynn - smashed in the mouth by a short ball from Anderson in the Old Trafford defeat last week - was pinned leg before on the back foot.

Jamie How's resistance, worth 40, was terminated when he followed one outside off-stump and edged low to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose. Lord's centurion Jacob Oram followed when a delivery seamed off the surface and nibbled the edge on its way through.

The quick quartet signalled success from both ends of the Nottingham ground for Anderson, who earlier picked up Aaron Redmond and Brendon McCullum from the Radcliffe Road end.

In just the second over of the innings, he sent opener Redmond back with a fine delivery which shaped past the outside edge to knock over off-stump.

And that stump was cartwheeling when McCullum, promoted to number three after being selected as a specialist batsman, was turned around aiming to the leg-side.

Anderson began the day alongside Stuart Broad, whose maiden Test half-century provided the bulk of a 76-run share for the eighth wicket, a stand which extended the innings into the second session.
