Double joy as Rose wraps up No1 spot
04 November 2007
Justin Rose is Europe's new No 1 after fighting off Padraig Harrington and leapfrogging Ernie Els to top the money list on the final day of the golfing year in Spain.
And, within half an hour of securing that title, the 27-year-old Englishman added to his standing in world golf by sinking an 18- foot birdie putt on Valderrama's 10th green to win the Volvo Masters after a three-man play-off.
On course: Rose has secured his first-ever Tour title
With his second victory of the season added to the Australian Masters title and following top 12 finishes in all four majors in 2007, Rose has broken into the world's top 10 for the first time in seventh place.
But, just as Ernie Els was criticised for choosing to play in Singapore rather than defend his £152,000 lead in the money list, Rose has decided not to play in this week's HSBC Champions Tournament in Shanghai, which is open to all European Tour winners.
After being plagued all year by a back problem, U.S-based Rose insists he needs a fortnight off to get himself fit again so he can represent England at the World Cup in China.
But last night as Rose celebrated, surrounded by his family, after tying for first place with a threeover- par 74 — a doublebogey seven at the 11th started a run of four dropped shots in as many holes — then winning the play-off against Dane Soren Kjeldsen and England's Simon Dyson with an 18-foot birdie putt on the 10th green.
"I am emotional right now," he said. 'It was a hard day. I looked like losing and dug deep. My dad would have been proud of me."
Chasing hard: Harrington needed to beat Rose to win the Merit title
Harrington had his chance but missed three vital putts on the final three greens. He said: "My putting was terrible. Had Justin finished five under par I would not have been so disappointed, but he was one under and I was only two back."
Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell stunned the crowd at Valderrama's infamous 17th green by holing a seven iron for an albatross two to move level with Kjeldsen and Rose at the top of the leaderboard. But he drove into trees off the 18th tee and ran up a double-bogey six for a share of fourth.
"That was a disaster," said McDowell.
