Drogba blast: United deserved title but we will gain revenge in Moscow

Didier Drogba admits Manchester United deserve to be champions and has blamed Chelsea's failed campaign on "complacency and a lack of concentration".

The striker, who is confident his team can gain revenge in next week's Champions League Final in Moscow, said Bolton's last-minute equaliser at Stamford Bridge on Sunday typified the sloppiness which plagued Chelsea's season.

It was the fourth time Avram Grant's team had surrendered the lead in the final seconds of a home game. Aston Villa, Everton and Wigan also scored late goals to earn a point.

"Losing those eight points has been massive for us," said Drogba. "It is far too many for us to lay claim to being champions. It is certainly proof of too much complacency and a lack of concentration on our part.

"Each time we had the result in our hands but sometimes we mentally finish games before the final whistle.

"Manchester United deserved their title. They have been rewarded for their consistency. We have made too many mistakes, including on Sunday when we let Bolton equalise 30 seconds before the end of added time."

Drogba told French sports paper L'Equipe he still believes Chelsea will rise to the occasion in Moscow, beating United as they did last month in the Barclays Premier League and in the FA Cup Final at Wembley last May.

"We know we can beat United and we proved it again two weeks ago," said the 30-year-old Ivory Coast striker, who limped away from the Bolton game with strapping on his knee.

"I took a knock on the knee I previously had surgery on. It reacted badly, so I put ice on it straight away. It was nothing serious and I will train this week. Nobody wants to be miss this huge game."

Grant gave his players a two-day break from training after the domestic season ended. He will assess the injury list when they return to the training ground today but is confident about Drogba and John Terry, who dislocated an elbow on Sunday.

What he may be less confident about is whether Drogba will be at Stamford Bridge next season, with the striker having spoken of a new challenge.

Grant said: "He has not told me he wants to leave, the club didn't decide they want him to leave, so at the moment I don't see any change."

Drogba added: "The only thing I'm thinking about now is the final in Moscow. I don't know what will happen in June or July.

"I did not want to leave Marseille to join Chelsea. I struggled to settle in with them and wanted to leave at the end of every season, not because they were not treating me well but because of personal unease.

"I had to start completely from scratch in England. I had to replace a great striker in Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who had put his stamp on Chelsea.

"It was not easy but my relationship with the club's supporters has developed. There was a misunderstanding between us at first but I then came to see what they were expecting. Now the relationship I have with them is similar to the one which I had with the Marseille supporters."

Chelsea are set to open contract talks with goalkeeper Petr Cech after the final. Cech, 25, has two years to run on his current deal but will be offered a two-year extension at £90,000 a week, tying him to Stamford Bridge until 2010.
