Dutch offer Jol an escape route

Martin Jol has been offered a way out of the shambles at White Hart Lane by the Dutch Football Association.
The Tottenham boss was told yesterday that his job was safe for now, but that was only after the man the club wanted to replace him, Juande Ramos, said he wanted more time to think about the move.

Martin Jol would replace Marco van Basten as the Dutch boss
Jol, though, is rated in his own country and it is understood a senior member of the Dutch FA rang him to ask whether he wants to take over from Marco van Basten as coach of the national team should things go awry at Spurs.
Van Basten is contracted until after Euro 2008, but could go before then as Holland are only third in their qualifying group and he is under severe pressure.
It would make for a useful escape route should chairman Daniel Levy go ahead with his intention to sack him and Van Basten fails to get good results in the forthcoming qualifiers against Bulgaria, Albania and Romania.
Ramos is expected to reveal why he chose to stay at Sevilla rather than join Spurs at a press conference this lunchtime.
As was revealed yesterday, Ramos was not ready to quit the Spanish club despite Spurs sending a high-powered delegation to meet him last Friday.
Now, it appears he will see out his contract this season and work with Sevilla, who are one match away from qualifying for the Champions League group stages.
Whether Jol has that long remains to be seen. Levy left him in no doubt yesterday insisting he is "an ambitious chairman, we are an ambitious club and we want Champions League football".
Two of Spurs' next three matches are against Manchester United (this Sunday) and Arsenal and defeat in those could still bring Jol the sack.
