Earnshaw's Derby's £3.5m fox in the box

Robert Earnshaw was last night tipped to be Derby's 'fox in the box' after becoming their record signing in a £3.5million move from Norwich.

The 26-year-old Wales striker agreed a three-year deal to be manager Billy Davies's first signing Derby won promotion to the Premiership through the play-offs in May.

Davies cut short his holiday in Dubai to tie up the deal and said Earnshaw would a big hit with the fans.

Davies said: "We are delighted to have a new striker on board with a fantastic track record in terms of goals scored at every level. 'Robert is a fantastic addition to my squad and I'm sure the fans will be excited that we have a new fox in the box for the new season."

Earnshawhas scored 12 goals in 43 games for Wales and last season netted 19 for Norwich despite being out for three months with a groin injury.

He is the only player to score hattricks in all divisions of the Football League, the Premiership, the FA Cup and League Cup as well as at international level.

Derby chairman Peter Gadsby added: 'We have started with a record signing and it is our hope that the coming weeks will also be busy. We are determined to give Billy a squad capable of at least preserving Premiership status."

Earnshaw made his mark at Cardiff before he joined West Bromwich for £3m in August 2004.

He scored 11 Premiership goals for West Bromwich in his first season at that level before moving to Norwich for £3.5m in January, 2006.

Norwich moved immediately to replace Earnshaw by re-signing their former youth product Jamie Cureton from Colchester for an undisclosed fee.
