Eastman regains Commonwealth middleweight title

A below-par Howard Eastman regained the vacant Commonwealth middleweight title when he outpointed Evans Ashira in Dudley but he won few admirers with his latest performance.

Ashira was bitterly disappointed with the scoring of the three judges, who all voted in favour of Eastman.

The Denmark-based Ashira said: "Eastman is a two-time world challenger and it should have been a clean fight.

"I came for a fight and not to wrestle. The referee did little to stop his holding and this was the reason why it was such an awkward fight.

"Eastman was hanging on to survive and the crowd were booing. What does that tell you about Eastman?

"I would be willing for a rematch but they will not be interested."

Eastman, who inflicted only Ashira's third defeat, was naturally pleased with his success following three defeats in his previous four fights.

But he admitted it was far from a classic and said: "The corner won the fight for me. They guided me to the victory. It proved you need a really good team and that was proved with this win.

"The corner took me through the fight.

"He was always a dangerous guy and I had to tie him up as much as possible.

"I tried to frustrate him as much as possible and it was a different sort of fight from normal.

"I saw Willie Pep on film do the same thing. It was old school boxing and it enabled me to win. Now we are building for the future and not dismantling. We are not just making up numbers.

"I apologise to the fight fans as they had a right to be disappointed. It gives me room for improvement."

Robert McCracken, Eastman's trainer, said: "Eastman showed real class in spasms.

"In the circumstances, Eastman's performance was excellent in view of the fact that he had only six days in the gym and three sparring sessions in preparation for the fight."
