EC chiefs to block Blatter quota plan

20 February 2008
Sepp Blatter, head of football's ruling body, was hoping to enforce his 6+5 rule that would stop clubs from playing more than five non-nationals.
But an EC spokesman said: "This would violate EU law. The Commission is not considering any change to allow FIFA to push forward this idea. FIFA are aware of this."
Hoping for quota system: FIFA supremo Sepp Blatter
Blatter is set to submit his plan to the FIFA Congress in Sydney on 29 and 30 May. Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said yesterday that the idea was "a nonsense that flies in the face of European law" after new FA chairman Lord Triesman said he wanted to take "a long, hard look" at the arrangement.
Meanwhile, Scudamore is expected to be given the green light by the FA tomorrow to explore further his 39th game plan even though he has admitted the idea may need a revamp.
Triesman will tell tomorrow's board meeting that he is happy for Scudamore to present his blueprint to Blatter in Zurich next week.
