Edwards snubs Johnno to stay with Wales

Shaun Edwards has rejected the chance of joining Martin Johnson's new England regime and signed a long-term contract to stay with Wales.

The Wasps head coach, 41, signed separate three-year agreements with the English Premiership club and the Welsh Rugby Union. Wales have agreed to pay Wasps a six-figure sum in compensation for borrowing Edwards as their defence coach.

In demand: England were too late to persuade Edwards

Johnson, whose own appointment is conditional on Brian Ashton being replaced as head coach, could not have moved quicker but his eleventh-hour bid to bring Edwards into the English fold as his right-hand man has come too late.

Edwards had already agreed a deal with 'lifelong friend' Warren Gatland to stay and build on last month's Grand Slam.

'I am very excited at the prospect of working within the Welsh set-up until 2011,' said Edwards. 'Once I'd shaken hands with Warren, it was too late for me to change. My loyalty to Wasps is undiminished.'

WRU chief executive Roger Lewis said: 'This is a very important day for Wales. Someone as talented as Shaun was bound to have opportunities to go in other directions and we are so glad he has chosen to go with us. He embodies the very best in professional sport.'
