Egan fined over 'Hitler' jibe but Yellowstone still a doubt

Yellowstone's jockey may have been given the all-clear to ride in tomorrow morning's Emirates Melbourne Cup, but Jane Chapple-Hyam's runner must pass a final veterinary check just six hours before the gates open for the big race if he is to take his place.

John Egan was fined £3,300 today by Racing Victoria for calling local vets "tin pot Hitlers'" over the saga over Yellowstone's fitness.

Egan could have been barred from riding but pleaded guilty to a charge of bringing racing into disrepute after making the comments on Saturday.

Yellowstone had been found cast in his box last week and looked an unlikely runner, but Chapple-Hyam was happy with the horse's condition as long ago as Friday when she said the vets' intrusions had been "a pain in the backside".

Egan claimed he had also been frustrated by the actions of the vets during the interview. He said: "I'm not going to let a couple of tin-pot Hitlers' spoil my trip."

But at the hearing Egan said: "I think when you are under pressure you say things you regret. I just felt that the vet was against the horse running. You don't have to be a qualified vet to know the horse was sound."

But the saga will now roll on until tomorrow after a further veterinary inspection at the horse's Sandown stables today.

Chairman of stewards Terry Bailey said: "We'll wait another 24 hours to see if the horse is okay. In the circumstances we owe it to them (connections). They've come halfway around the world."
