Eggert plans rulebook defence in Tevez case

West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson is confident the club can avoid a crippling points penalty this week that would confirm their relegation by questioning the precise meaning of the Premier League rulebook.

The club face a hearing on Thursday into allegations that outside firms owned stakes in Argentine players Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez after they joined from Corinthians.

Magnusson hopes that his lawyers can show that though the companies linked to Kia Joorabchian and Pini Zahavi did have agreements regarding the players, it made no difference to the running of the club or team selection. West Ham are further charged with failing to produce all relevant documents at the time.

If the hearing results in a points deduction, the club will undoubtedly appeal and the case could drag on into July.
