Elliott’s lightning strike stuns Wigan

A brilliant piece of improvisation from Stuart Elliott reminded Wigan of the not-so-distant days when they fought on even terms — or less — with clubs like Hull City.

Wigan manager Chris Hutchings expected to demonstrate the strength of his squad rather than intend any disrespect to the competition by making eight changes.

But Hull deserved their win, even though it took a mistake to rock the home side.

Andreas Granqvist skied an attempted clearance and looked on in anguish as Elliott reacted with lightning speed. His anticipation was perfect as he netted a waisthigh volley from 18 yards.

Hull, for whom Stephen McPhee and Michael Bridges wasted chances, were seldom stretched. Other than an early miss from Caleb Folan and a Fitz Hall header tipped over by Boaz Myhill, Wigan failed to mount sustained pressure.

It proved a challenging first start in Wigan colours for midfielder Michael Brown. For all the width provided by David Cotterill and Kevin Kilbane, Wigan rarely disturbed the assurance of Wayne Brown and Michael Turner at the heart of Hull's defence.

Michael Brown took matters into his own hands, but his 25-yarder was expertly kept out by Myhill.
