Emotional Dokic wins back Australian hearts

Jelena Dokic, who spent two years fighting depression, was in tears after defeating world No17 Anna Chadvetadze 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 on a hugely emotional centre court.

This was only a second-round match but the significance cannot be underestimated as Dokic went some way to erasing the memory of a career scarred by the influence of "Mad Dad" Damir, who is no longer part of her life.

The Australian public, who used to ridicule the former world No4 for turning her back on the country and following her family back to their native Serbia, have fallen back in love with a player who now represents them from her world ranking of No187.

Dokic said: "This is an amazing night and the memory is something I will keep with me. I will regret leaving Australia for the rest of my life and I took that decision under the influence of my father.

"I don't expect everyone to understand but I am now proud to be playing for this country again. Things seem to have swung my way and I was glad to make the decision to come back three years ago."
