England can't trust Bentley

David Bentley's controversial withdrawal from England's squad for the European Under 21 Championship was not the first time he has sidestepped national service on the eve of a big tournament.

Bentley and his then Arsenal team-mate Justin Hoyte pulled out of the 2003 Under 20 World Cup the day before they were due to leave for the United Arab Emirates.

Arsene Wenger insisted he needed them during the tournament.

The two youngsters saw it as their big chance at Arsenal and were determined not to miss the opportunity.

Bentley made his first Arsenal start against Wolves in the League Cup on December 2, the same day the England Under 20 team were beaten 1-0 by Egypt.

England also lost to Japan, drew with Colombia and came home without scoring.

Bentley went on to score his first goal for Arsenal in January, against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, and made his Premier League debut in May but could not establish himself in the first team.

Now the midfielder feels his ambitions are best served by resting for the next two weeks before Blackburn report back early for InterToto Cup action.
