England flop McClaren to be unveiled tomorrow for FC Twente job

Former England manager Steve McClaren will be officially unveiled as the new FC Twente boss at a press conference tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

The 47-year-old will be presented to the media at the Bistro de Broeierd close to the club's Grolsch Veste Stadium at 10am local time, 9am BST.

McClaren has signed a two-year deal to replace Fred Rutten, who has left the club to take over at Schalke in Germany's Bundesliga.

The Yorkshireman, who left the England job in November following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008, will lead the Enschede side into a Champions League qualifying campaign as he resumes his career in Holland.

McClaren learnt his trade under Jim Smith at Derby and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, where he helped guide the Red Devils to their unprecedented Treble in 1999.

Two years later, he was handed the chance to step out of Ferguson's shadow by Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson.

He spent five years at the Riverside Stadium, winning the Carling Cup in 2004 - the Teessiders' first major trophy - and reaching the UEFA Cup final two seasons later, only to lose to Seville in what was his final game in charge.

Days earlier, he had been appointed as successor to Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was to stand down as England boss after that summer's World Cup finals in Germany.

Things started promisingly for the new national coach with a 4-0 friendly win over European champions Greece and successive European Championship qualifier victories over Andorra and Macedonia.

However, a 0-0 home draw with the Macedonians was followed by a 2-0 defeat in Croatia - a night which will be remembered for keeper Paul Robinson's air-shot - and when England failed to win in Israel and struggled to beat Andorra in Barcelona, the knives were out.

A 3-0 win over Russia after victories by the same score over Estonia and Israel rekindled hope, but Russia's 2-1 revenge mission in Moscow threw the group back into the melting pot.

Israel's shock 2-1 defeat of Guus Hiddink's side opened the door once again, but a demoralising 3-2 Wembley defeat by Croatia in the final game ended the dream, and ultimately, McClaren's reign.

He has been linked with a series of jobs since, most recently, the position at Blackburn which was today filled by Paul Ince.

However, like Sir Bobby Robson before him, he has opted to further his football education in Holland after being courted for several weeks by Twente president Joop Munsterman.
