England kids blow semi-final chance after goalless draw with Italy

by Nicholas Harling

England's hopes of reaching the UEFA U19 Championship semi-finals are in the balance following their goalless draw with Italy in Jablonec.

Coach Brian Eastick’s side must now beat Greece in Liberec on Sunday and hope that Italy don’t beat the Czech Republic.

Eastick made two changes but England are still without a goal after two group games. Victor Moses one of the two recalled players, formed a useful partnership up front with Daniel Sturridge.

England only seriously threatened early on and in the 73rd minute when Moses forced a save from Vincenzo Fiorillo with a stinging drive.

England’s bright start could have produced three goals inside the first 15 minutes. Sturridge was involved in the first two chances. He volleyed wide when Danny Rose crossed from the left and then supplied a cross from which Freddie Sears fired into the side-netting.

Italy survived again when Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs hit a post before looking dangerous themselves when Stefano Okaka Cuka narrowly failed with a shot. They looked odds-on to go ahead in the 43rd minute when Okaka surged onto a pass from the much vaunted Fernando Forestieri only to be denied by a last-ditch interception from West Ham’s James Tomkins.
