England to have new boss by next February but Mourinho denies FA contact

The Football Association will meet today for the first time since the departure of Steve McClaren and aim to have their new coach in place before England's match against Switzerland in February.

Brian Barwick will sit down with the rest of the FA board this morning and will then also seek advice from England captain John Terry.

Jose Mourinho said there had been no contact with the FA but is he waiting for the call?

The chief executive has insisted there is no time frame for appointing McClaren's successor but it is understood the recruitment process is well underway.

Two of the leading candidates, Martin O'Neill and Alan Shearer, have already said that the time is not right for them to take the job and they were joined today by a particularly coy Jose Mourinho.

Speaking outside his home in Portugal, the former Chelsea boss insisted that he had not been contacted by the FA.

"I know nothing about it," Mourinho said. "I know nothing. The only thing I know is that I should be on my sofa watching the game. I have nothing to say."

But when asked if he would be interested in the role, Mourinho refused to rule himself out.

"I cannot answer you," he told Sky Sports News. "My job in this moment is to take care of my family, to take care of my things in Portugal. I'm enjoying my life, not 100 per cent because there is no football, but I am enjoying my family and my life."

Mourinho's appointment would be welcomed with open arms by his former skipper John Terry, who last night led Chelsea to the last 16 of the Champions League with a 4-0 win over Rosenborg.

Terry later revealed that the shame of England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 had left him reluctant to face the public - particularly after he was booed mercilessly at Derby.

Terry said: "It is going to take a very long time for the public to get over it. For us as well, you don't want to come out of your house or people to see you.

"When you walk down the street or are out you wonder whether people are looking at you. We have let them down. But life goes on. As time goes on things heal and it gets easier. It was very disappointing for me as captain this happening but we have to make it work in the World Cup now.

"The players need to reform and have a good chat about what direction we are going to move in and go forward."
