England to keep door open for Tindall

England will today rule Mike Tindall out of Saturday's World Cup trial against Wales at Twickenham while refusing to give up on his participation in the tournament.

The more significant decision over his fading prospects of making the final cut will be taken within the next 24 hours based on a comprehensive medical prognosis. Despite the increasing likelihood of the Gloucester centre also missing the second home Test against France the following week, the World Cup holders will grant him a further stay of execution provided they think he has a chance, however faint, of recovering in time.

Tindall has not played since breaking his right leg at Newcastle almost four months ago, but England's reluctance to write him off is such that they will consider picking him for the tournament despite being obliged to choose their 30-man squad no later than August 14 — four days before their last warm-up match, the return against France in Marseille.

Such a gamble, irrespective of the calculation, underlines his importance as one of the precious few who know what it takes to win the World Cup.
