England v New Zealand - Day 2

Tim Ambrose edged nervously to his first Test century on Thursday night but failed to kick on to the really big innings as England were dismissed for 342 by New Zealand on day two of a second Test that is developing into a compelling contest.

Ambrose, stuck on 97 overnight, was made to work devilishly hard for the three extra runs that meant so much to him as Jacob Oram found the perfect line and shape to test Ambrose's nerve as well as his technique.

Hundred and out: Ambrose claimed his ton, but was then quickly out as England failed to kick on

It was not until the first ball of the fourth over of the day that Ambrose edged a ball just short of a length high and wide of the slips and to the boundary to reach three figures in only his third Test innings, to the delight of the English majority in another good Basin Reserve crowd.

But Ambrose's joy and relief was shortlived as he was dismissed in the following over, edging another good ball that swung from Kyle Mills to second slip to be out for 102. The rest of the England side quickly followed as they were dismissed 40 minutes before lunch for 342.

Ambrose will have been delighted to reach three figures but disappointed not to kick on. At least England found a reasonable sting in their tail as Paul Collingwood produced an innings of character that he specialises in and then Ryan Sidebottom and Monty Panesar enjoyed themselves by adding some valuable runs.

Mark Gillespie took three of the five wickets to fall on the second day to finish with four for 79 but Oram was the pick of the Kiwi attack, ending with three for 46 off 29 overs.

James Anderson hit back for England, bowling Matthew Bell for a duck and then having Jamie How caught by Andrew Strauss at first slip as New Zealand struggled to 11 for two at lunch.
