Officers investigating allegations of football corruption arrested Chimbonda last September on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud but they then released him from bail last Friday.

The arrest surrounded an £18,000 loan given to Chimbonda by his agent Willie McKay with the latter defending his decision to give the player the money.

The 29-year-old has now been cleared of any wrongdoing, but admits the affair affected his form.

"I always knew I would be ," he said. "My family were in tears when I was arrested and I found it very difficult to explain to them what was happening when I had done nothing wrong in the first place.

"The investigation affected me as I was forced to spend two days in the cells for nothing. I find the policing in England very strange."
