Spanish eyes: Hughes has kept up City's interest in Zabaleta
Manchester City have resurrected their interest in 23-year-old Espanyol defender Pablo Zabaleta.
The Argentina right back was originally scouted under guidance from Sven Goran Eriksson but had also figured on Mark Hughes' radar while the manager was at Blackburn.
The chances of him going to City looked to have diminished with Eriksson's departure but Hughes is still interested. Zabaleta, who has a Spanish passport, has also been monitored by Juventus and both Milan clubs and would cost around £10million.
City and Everton target Andrei Arshavin, meanwhile, has agreed to an ultimatum from his club Zenit St Petersburg to either find a new club within a week or stay put.
Arshavin, 27, who has also been watched by Spurs, Arsenal and Newcastle, has agreed to sign for another year unless a deal comes through by June 20.
The Russia midfielder has said he wants to move to England or Spain. But Zenit official Konstantin Sarsania said: 'Andrei wants to try playing in one of the leading European leagues, but if he doesn't leave us by June 20 he'll stay in the team.'
City manager Hughes is busy working on bringing in new faces ahead of their UEFA Cup first qualifying round tie in July. Hughes will learn City's opponents on June 27.
The home clash of the tie seems certain to be held at Barnsley's Oakwell ground as the City of Manchester Stadium is unavailable.
