Euro 2008 live: Czech Republic v Portugal

Czech Republic 1 Portugal 3

6.50: Final whistle is blown. A delightful match in Geneva and Portugal probably deserved to win. They are all but in the quarter-finals, and will definitely be if Turkey win tonight, or their game with Switzerland ends in a draw. Czech Republic will still expect to claim second spot in the group however.

6.48: GOAL: Gaps are unsurprisingly being left in the Czech defence and Portugal take advantage. Ronaldo races through and unselfishly passes across goal for Ricardo Quaresma to tap into an empty net. Game over and harsh on Karel Bruckner's side.

6.40: Again Czech Republic have some joy down the right, and when the ball is centred Ricardo tips a header from Sionko over the bar. It wasn't a convincing header, seeming to catch Sionko somewhat by surprise. Time is running out for Czech Republic.

6.35: A fine cross from the right is headed wide by Baros, who ought to have done better.

6.33: Deco is fouled just outside the penalty area, and there is some discussion as to who should take it. Eventually Simao fires a disappointing effort straight into the wall. Certainty of the tournament so far - Ronaldo will take the next free-kick.

6.31: Fernando Meira replaces Joao Moutinho for Portugal.

6.29: The giant Jan Koller comes on for Tomas Galasek.

6.25: Stanislav Vlcek comes on for Marek Matejovsky as Czech Republic look for a way back in Geneva.

6.20: GOAL: Sorry Czech Republic - some praise from me and then they fall behind again. And it's that man, the great Cristiano Ronaldo. You would think long and hard about whether to use the word great about some 23-year-olds. Not this man though. Deco crosses from the right and Ronaldo fires home first time splendidly beyond a hapless Cech.

6.15: Very difficult to predict the result of this match - after a slow start to the second half the Portuguese are looking lively again. Worth saying again how well the Czech Republic are playing compared to their insipid opening display against the Swiss.

6.11: A rare lapse in concentration from Rozehnal allows Gomes a brief sight at goal, but credit to the Czech defender for atoning for his slip and blocking the striker's shot.

6.09: Nuno Gomes ghosts past Marek Jankulovski on the edge of the Czech Republic area, but his shot is straight at Cech.

6.05: Marek Matejovsky threads a superb pass through to Sonko, who crosses low across the penalty area, but agonisingly beyond Baros.

6.02: Back under way in this Group A clash.

5.46: Half-time whistle is blown in Geneva, and nobody will be asking for their money back. I hope I don't put a 'commentator's curse' on events to come but after a slow opening weekend this tournament is throwing up a selection of fine matches and moments. Long may it last.

5.46: Ronaldo's free-kick from 30 yards is gathered low down by Cech.

5.41: Ronaldo fires a superb shot from outside the penalty area, but Cech is equal to the task and beats the ball away.

5.39 Deco floats a decent ball into the penalty area, but the ball is headed away before Ronaldo can pounce at the far post.

5.38: It looks like Chelsea have brought a fine player in Jose Bosingwa - but I guess he should be half-decent at that price. The defender has looked classy in this first half.

5.34: Baros looks like a man reborn and his delightful mazy run has the Portuguese defence at sixes and sevens until the ball is scrambled clear.

5.28: Portugal again deal poorly with a corner, and Sionko volleys back across goal. The defence hack clear but the Portuguese are by no means comfortable here.

5.24: Ronaldo finds himself in far too much space and drives a low shot from 25 yards, forcing Cech into a decent save.

5.23: Deco glides past a couple of challanges and fires a shot narrowly over the bar from the edge of the area.

5.19: The Czech Republic look to be much improved from their opening match, probably inspired by the knowledge that the winners of this group will likely avoid tournament favourites Germany in the quarter-finals.

5.16: GOAL: What a cracking start to this Group A clash. Libor Sionko dives to head powerfully into roof of the net from a Jaroslav Plasil corner.

5.14: A fine run and cross from Grygera sets up Milan Baros, who heads over the bar.

5.06: GOAL: Portugal take an early lead after Nuno Gomes slips the ball into the penalty area, Ronaldo tries to round the keeper but Czech diverts the ball to Deco, who forces the ball home at the second attempt.

5.03: As ever many eyes are on Cristiano Ronaldo, but his speculative shot from distance is easily blocked and cleared.

5.00: Whistle blows and we're under way in Geneva.

..

The winners of this clash will become the first country through to the quarter-finals.

Portugal were superb in their opening win over Turkey, while Czech Republic were slightly fortunate to beat co-hosts Swtizerland.

All eyes will again be on Cristiano Ronaldo, as he tries to beat Petr Cech, the man that saved his penalty in the European Cup final shoot-out last month.
