European win would be dream for Big Sam

Bolton Wanderers need a result tomorrow night against Macedonian side FC Rabotnicki if they are to keep their European dream alive, but the horse named after their exploits a couple of seasons ago could be in line for another big prize at Newmarket this Saturday.

Sam Allardyce may have left Bolton in controversial circumstances at the end of last season to become manager of Newcastle, but 'Big Sam' remains a part-owner of European Dream, who was bought to celebrate the Trotter's first-ever qualification for European competition which saw them make the last 32 in the UEFA Cup in 2005-2006.

On target: Soft conditions will suit Allardyce's European Dream

Other co-owners include Allardyce's former assistant, Phil Brown, now boss at Hull City and four Bolton players.

Whether relations between the group are as cordial as ever despite Allardyce's exit is unclear, but victory in the £160,000 totesport.com Cambridgeshire would surely help heal any wounds and trainer Richard Guest is full of confidence.

"I've been hoping for rain at Newmarket and it sounds like they have had a bit. If they get some more then that is going to be a big help," said Guest.

"We've booked apprentice Neil Brown to take an extra 5lb off and European Dream has had a nice break and has been freshened up specifically for this race."

Meanwhile, Winker Watson will miss his planned engagement in Friday's Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket and the rest of the season after being found to have inflammation in his near-fore knee.

Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam said: " Fortunately, there's no injury as such and he'll be fine again quite soon.

"It was agreed to call a halt for the season. It was the sensible thing to do because Winker is going to be a very classy three-year-old."
